Kamala Harris was delivered a disastrous blow in the recent US elections where she lost by a large margin to her competitor, Trump. Though different people give different reasons for her loss, one major factor comes up that seem to have an overriding effect on her loss.
It is clear that US Mideast policy especially regarding the genocide in Gaza, played a profound role in this election. The most telling fact in this race is the drop in voter turnout. Trump had less votes than when he stood for elections in 2020. But Harris’s numbers were way short of Biden’s 81.2 million votes in 2020. Where did the votes go? Not to the Green Party, which only increased its tally by about 300,000 votes. Those were the voters who choose not to vote in this presidential race at all.

Israel’s genocidal campaign in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, which continues unabated, has killed more than 43,000 Palestinians and displaced nearly all of the 2.3 million residents of Gaza. But although most Americans, and overwhelming numbers of Democrats, favor restricting or limiting the weapons that the US provides to Israel, the Biden administration has continued to arm it to the teeth.
During the Democratic primaries, nearly 1 million voters — including many Arab, Muslim, and young and progressive voters in several states — voted “uncommitted” in protest against the Biden administration’s complicity in Israel’s genocide.
When voter turnout is this low. it is not due to apathy, but to disillusionment. Gaza was the most visible issue that created frustration and disillusionment with the Democrats and suppressed turnout in support of Kamala Harris.
Democratic voters wanted a ceasefire and certainly wanted the United States to stop supporting the devastation in Gaza. But Harris made it clear from the outset that she had no intention of moving away from Biden’s genocidal policies in Gaza.
It would have been a simple matter to accommodate the Uncommitted Movement and have a moderate Palestinian speaker at the DNC. But Harris said no.
Green Party candidate Jill Stein, who campaigned on the issue of ending the genocide, won 22 percent of the vote in Dearborn, Michigan, a city with a majority Arab American population. Harris won 28 percent and Trump won 47 percent. Hussein Dabajeh, a Lebanese American political consultant in the Detroit area, said that Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, a Democrat and Palestinian American, significantly outperformed Harris in Dearborn. She received 9,600 more votes than Harris.
