Jews Demand End Gaza Starvation Outside Trump Hotel

Last Monday night, over 2,000 Jews rallied outside the Trump Hotel in Manhattan, demanding an end to the starvation and ethnic cleansing of Gaza.

The protest, organized by Jewish-American anti-occupation group IfNotNow, drew hundreds to Columbus Circle under the banner “Trump: Jews Say No More,” calling for an end to the war in Gaza and greater access for much-needed humanitarian aid.

About two thousand Jews rallied in New York on Monday night outside Trump Hotel to demand an end to Israel’s starvation and ethnic cleansing of Gaza.

Protesters also held signs reading “Stop Ethnic Cleansing,” “Never Again is Now,” “Stop Starving Gaza,” and “Not in Our Name,” Britain’s The Guardian reported.

“Let’s not mince words, the Israeli government’s blockade of Gaza is a policy of ethnic cleansing by way of forced mass starvation,” said Morriah Kaplan, IfNotNow’s interim executive director, in a speech.

She added that the US government needs to “use its considerable leverage to end these horrors.”

Morriah was one of over 40 Jewish leaders arrested last night. In her words: “Our tradition teaches us that if we can protest our people’s actions, and we don’t, then we are responsible for their actions.”

At the rally, rabbis led us in reciting the Mourner’s Kaddish to honor the memories of Palestinians killed by the Israeli military’s blockade and missile strikes. Powerful speakers urged swift moral action, including NYC Comptroller Brad Lander, T’ruah CEO Rabbi Jill Jacobs, Palestinian photojournalist Motaz Azaiza, and IfNotNow’s own Interim Executive Director Morriah Kaplan.

New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, the city’s highest-ranking Jewish elected official, said at the protest, “Yesterday we commemorated Tisha B’Av, mourning the destruction done to the Jewish people. Today, we are standing to call out the destruction being carried out by the Jewish state.”

Rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, the Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive on Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, killing nearly 61,000 Palestinians, almost half of them women and children. The military campaign has devastated the enclave and brought it to the verge of famine.

IfNotNow is committed to leading the Jewish call for justice and shared safety. A spokesperson of the group said, “ We won’t back down from our responsibllity. At IfNotNow, we’ve been working day in and out to organize our Jewish communities. Yesterday’s action is the result of months of organizing to call our people in. And we won’t stop now.”
